Family Day Fun with Alberta Culture

Family Day is a bonus day off school and work, and the perfect time to embrace winter fun with loved ones. If you’re still making plans for the long weekend, provincial parks, heritage sites and museums are offering free admission and special programming on Monday, February 18. Some have free activities all weekend long. So get out and enjoy winter. If you don’t feel brave enough to face the cold, there are plenty of indoor crafts, treats, shows and games to entertain young and old.

Nine heritage sites across Alberta will have unique interactive activities for you to learn something new. At the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, enjoy a free presentation by a paleontologist, or make a replica of a fossil. Build your own balloon launcher, or take part in one of the other do-it-yourself science activities at the Oil Sands Discovery Centre in Fort McMurray. From Fort McMurray to Cardston, there’s something for everyone.

Check out the provincial parks! Crimson Lake Provincial Park, Beaver Lake Provincial Recreation Area and William A. Switzer Provincial Park will have a full weekend of snowshoeing, ice fishing and cross-country skiing. If you don’t have any equipment or experience, don’t worry. Parks interpreters will be on hand with advice and gear you can try out for the afternoon.
