A new course is being served up June 17-23, on Alberta Avenue, for Dine the Ave, running along 118th avenue. With 20 participating restaurants during this week's event, where each will feature special menu items or dishes with prices ranging from $10 to $20. Organized by the Alberta Avenue Business Association and our tour by Wild Heart Collective
Our evening kicked off at Battista's Calzone's, where we were served up, mouth watering calzones! Opening up 10 years ago, Battista turned an old garage into this heart warming welcoming restaurant with a focus on making the best calzone's in the city, and they are! On our tour, we enjoyed sampling Pesto Presto, Giovanna or the Spicy Italian, the same selections they'll be serving for this week's event. Battista’s Calzone is located at 11745 84 St
Leaving Battista's, we walked up to T & D Noodle House (located at 8405 118ave), owned by Laura Truong, where her staff (Min & Megan) served us a sampling of their beef skewers, grilled chicken, steamed rice, with an in house made fish sauce (yum!) and spring rolls! During this weeks event, they'll offer a similar dish for $10 of two springs rolls, chicken served on rice or noodles with a drink!
Beginning to feel a bit full, I'm thankful we are walking to each of these wonderful locally owned restaurants, and the next stop totally feeds my soul at the La Bodeguita de Cuba (11810 87 St) where we are warmly greeted by the owners,Jennifer and Yordanis . Our meal here was amazing (thankful during the tour we are served up a smaller portion size, than what will be served during Eats on 118th week). Our hosts shared with us a dish of fried plaintains, a shredded beef (ropa veija), grilled pork cubes with onions (very tender!) with black beans and rice. While we finished up our meal, the owner pulled out his guitar and played for us, we then signed the wall in the cozy bar making this evening, muy perfecto! During the event, you’ll be able to enjoy for $20, either a chicken soup or Caesar salad , followed up with the main course, ropa vieja (shredded beef), masas de puerco fritas, fricases de pollo and for dessert, either cuban flan or cake.
With two restaurants left to go, we slowly make our way to burn off our last meal and walk the next few blocks, stop to take a few photos of street art as a group and continued on our way to Simba's Den Pub and Bistro, located at 9349 118ave. Simba’s opened their doors in May 2018, a welcomed addition to the changing face of Alberta Avenue serving up a wonderful mix of pub fair, vegetarian dishes, and Afrikan dishes! During Eats on 118 week, you’ll have two options to choose from for $20, either a veggie platter, with 3 types of veggies & salad, with ingera bread or basmati rice. Or Choose the Meat platter (choose 2, beef/chicken/lamb & salad), with ingera bread or basmati rice
Our last stop, brings our tour to the end at the beloved, Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse located at 9351 118 Ave where you can enjoy for $10 a sweet taste of the carrot or for $15 the Bistro Coffeehouse Special.
If you're looking to experience Eats on 118, double check individual restaurant hours as some may be closed on select days or have specific dining hours.
