Interview with Local Children's Author Marilyn Ferrett

YEG INSPIRED : Tell our families a little bit about yourself?
MARILYN: I enjoy quotes by the famous and the not-so-famous, and often look to the wisdom behind the words for inspiration and motivation. As a grandparent, mother and children’s author, this is one of my favourites.

“I hope that my daughter grows up empowered, and doesn't define herself by the way she looks, but by qualities that make her an intelligent, strong and responsible woman.” - Isaiah Mustafa

YEG INSPIRED : Your latest title that you've published?
MARILYN: MOLLY The Beautiful Pig

YEG INSPIRED : How many books have your written?
MARILYN:  Two, Molly The Beautiful Pig Meets Totem is the second book in the “Molly The Beautiful Pig” series. It is due to be released October 2018.

YEG INSPIRED : The demographic your books appeal to most?
MARILYN:  The benefits of reading to children have been well documented. MOLLY the Beautiful Pig is a sharing story for all ages. Girls, grade two and up, enjoy reading this book independently, but contributing to the conversation, the storyline generates, meets their needs on many levels.

YEG INSPIRED : What inspired you to become a writer?
MARILYN: As a child, the story of Helen Keller’s remarkable life was captivating, and her powerful example definitely shaped my decision to begin writing books for children.Celebrating childhood, but at the same time encouraging children to persist in overcoming difficult situations, is at the heart of every MOLLY story.
“Never bend your head. Hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye.” - Helen Keller

YEG INSPIRED :  Where can people order your books from?
MARILYN: Copies are available online at Chapters, and BARNES&Noble. A direct links can be found at
Locally, the Junque Cellar in old Strathcona is very generous in their support of local  artists, and carries copies of the book year round.

YEG INSPIRED :  One thing that you love about Edmonton?
MARILYN: Families who purchase a Naturally Edmonton Annual Membership can enjoy the many opportunities available at City of Edmonton Facilities, at a considerable saving. When budgets are stretched, and there are many other  demands, prioritizing a family outing often becomes possible.

YEG INSPIRED :  A favourite past time?
MARILYN: In all honesty, I would have to say that there are very few hours that are not fuelled by the passion I have for my business, my writing and for MOLLY related activities. Outside of that, a good movie and a bag of popcorn do it for me.

YEG INSPIRED : For young writers, is there a piece of advice you'd give to those starting out?
MARILYN: Reach out! Engage others! Ask for help! Have tea with a friend! Writing can be a solitary activity. Find someone who is interested in YOU, and your story, and travel the road together.
